Google offers money-saving phone options, but catch is you have to take new number

There's just no escaping Google. First, they handled your Internet searches. Next, they provided your e-mail, and then your browser itself. Now, they want to give you a new phone number.

"It fills a need people didn't even know they had," said Adam Pash, editor of online productivity blog Lifehacker.com.

Google Voice started as a service called GrandCentral, which provided users with a new phone number in their preferred area code (212 numbers are at a premium), and enabled them to use it to ring all their phones at once. You never need to miss a call no matter where you are. In addition, it offered the ability to check your voicemail online or even to listen in as a voicemail was being left.

In 2007, Google bought GrandCentral. A few months ago, Google announced it was ready to relaunch it with a host of new features. Now, users can set schedules as to which phone would ring when: your work phone and your BlackBerry during the business day, your home phone in the evening, or none of the above if you're on vacation.

Another new feature is free calls in the continental U.S. through a system in which you enter the number you want on their Web site and it puts you through on the phone you choose.

Also handy: a feature for automatic voicemail transcription in your e-mail inbox.

All this is worthless if it doesn't work, though.

"Most of the things Google Voice does, it does really well," Pash said. "If you've got multiple phones, you'd like more control over how your calls are handled or you're just sick of listening to voicemail, it's probably worth the effort."

If you do take the plunge, Pash recommended changing your voicemail greeting to explain the switch.

"I'd recommend it, but it's not for everyone," said Neils Oleson, a tech consultant from Islandia, L.I., who gives out his Google Voice number to family and friends. "People who use a mobile as their sole phone are the best fit, since it gives you the ability to limit how you use it based on context and location."

For business calls, Oleson uses Phone.com, a paid competitor to Google Voice that specializes in providing virtual phone numbers and extensions for small businesses.

Phone.com has personal-use plans that start from $4.88 a month for 250 minutes of talking. Its big advantage over Google Voice is a more robust call routing system; different people can get different voicemail messages, for example. For small business owners, Phone.com even allows users to make automated voice menus.

One concern about Google Voice is a patent the search giant recently filed for a system to place ads in phone calls. While they haven't announced any plans to make use of it, it's become a cause for concern.

"I'd have to be resold on [Google Voice], and would probably flip to Phone.com," Oleson said.

"I could see this happening," Pash said. "But it doesn't seem like something Google would be eager to do."

Make Money Online - Free PPC Kit For Home Business Success

Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising has become an extremely popular technique for generating website traffic, building lists of qualified prospects in specific niches, making sales and, in some cases, reaching prospects around the world where it wouldn’t have been either feasible or likely using traditional advertising methods.

Pay Per Click if used correctly, can set you on a path to potential financial independence, it’s very important for newcomers to get the proper Pay per Click education by reading one of the excellent books on Pay per Click Advertising before actually getting in the channel and spending money.

There are many different companies that you can opt for your advertising campaigns, Google Adwords, MSN, Yahoo Search Marketing, but the undoubted king of Pay per Click Marketing is Google Adwords. Google has changed their advertising rules numerous times now since opening their doors at the early part of this decade, but still has an enormous following.

One of the most recent changes that occurred at Google was the capability to separate “Search Ads” and “Content Ads” within your campaigns. When you advertise using Google Adwords your ads will not only be show within the Google search engine, but also may be placed on other people’s websites that have related subject matter and also on some of their “Partner Networks”.

For you as an advertiser it’s very significant that you keep these two entities separate when running your campaign. Now you have the option to either pay less money for the traffic you receive through the Content ads or you can eliminate them from your campaign entirely. I recommend that, if you do choose to run them, even at a lower cost, you set up an entirely different campaign. It’s essential that you know exactly where your clicks and sales are coming from in order to eliminate waste and only pay for what’s actually working.

There are several courses which are available which teach you how to start to make money online fast with PPC like adwords. The great thing ablout these is that you dont even need your own product, you can join as an affiliate of another service and make comission literally while you sleep.

Is It Possible to Make Money Online Fast?

There is no question the internet is the place to go to start a new career or pick up some extra money on the side. The problem is everyone wants to make money online fast. Far too many people want to make thousands of dollars overnight which just leads to disappointment and failure.

What you need to understand is it is not possible to make money online fast in abundance. If you are looking to pick up $100, you can do this fairly quickly. There are always surveys that need to be filled out that can pay $50 to $100 in a couple of days.

However, it takes time to make a large amount of money. If you are going to start a business, you have to realize there are countless facets that go into building an empire. First, you need to get everything on your web site up and running. This includes finding a domain name, finding a hosting company, and determining what niche you want to get into.

As soon as you have a web site live online, your next step is to build a visually appealing site with fresh and enticing content. It takes a great deal of time to build web page after web page, and this is what you need to do in order to make money online. You have to have something to offer prospects when they arrive at your site.

While doing this, you have got to put together an efficient marketing campaign. Believe it or not, no one knows you exist online unless you tell them you do. Therefore, you need to be writing and submitting articles, posting in forums, exchanging links with quality web sites, and networking in the countless social sites. This is not going to happen overnight.

Finally, you have got to promptly respond to all customers and visitors and show them you care. No matter how busy you are or how many things you have to do, the customer always comes first. After all, it is the customer that decides whether or not your business lasts.

As you can see, there are a great deal of responsibilities and duties that come with running a business online. If you want to make money online fast, you are going to have to do it filling out surveys. Otherwise, be patient and give it time. If you have the drive and motivation you will find success on the internet over time.

Money changes everything

Michael Moore's provocative, polemical new documentary, "Capitalism: A Love Story," is a sermon on the theme that love of money is the root of all evil.

With a machine gun's worth of bullet points, Moore illustrates outrageous corporate practices (Citibank and American Express profiting from secret life insurance policies on their bottom-rung employees; a for-profit juvenile jail in Pennsylvania that bribed judges to keep its cells filled; sweetheart home-loan terms for politicos regulating the bank industry). The moral is spelled out by several Catholic clergymen: Capitalism is "a sin."

Following last week's sneak preview of his film at the Lagoon Cinema in Minneapolis, Moore said, "You can't regulate evil. You have to eliminate it." That's why he made the film: to rouse viewers to take political action.

"I'm getting older, and I want to see change in my lifetime. I don't do anything anymore because it's the cool thing to do or the righteous thing to do. I want actual action and change to occur."

If it seems unlikely that the United States would change its capitalist stripes, it's no crazier than Nelson Mandela getting out of prison in South Africa, let alone becoming that nation's president, he said, or the United States electing a black president.

"If I could wave a magic wand, if I could change one thing in Washington, D.C., it would be to remove money from our electoral process," Moore said. It rankles him that standing up for his convictions, controversial though they may be, inspires his adversaries to brand him "un-American."

"That hurts when I so clearly love this country and do what I think are the true patriotic things one should do: standing up for what I believe in and trying to make things better for my fellow citizens. They want to convince the average American that I want to take them down some path of godless communism. I'm the opposite of godless. I still go to mass.

What makes Twitter worth a billion dollars?

TWITTER can be a tough crowd. When news broke last week that the profit-free internet phenomenon had attracted a $100m (£62m) investment and was now “worth” $1 billion, the reaction was almost as swift and harsh as that handed out to Kanye West after his unsolicited intervention at the MTV Music Awards.

“Twitter valued at $100 billion? (SIC) I heard $1 trillion and gets their own representatives at the UN,” Twittered milepetrone. “If twitter is worth a $ billion I must be worth twice that. I have a job and incoming revenues,” wrote gopevangelist. “Nutty,” was among the kinder comments.

In these straitened times the reaction was perhaps no surprise. Even Silicon Valley hasn’t seen anything like this since Google bought YouTube in 2006, and certainly not since the credit crunch knocked the froth off the world’s economy.

In just three-and-a-half years, San Francisco-based Twitter has achieved the Silicon Valley dream, going from an obscure start-up to global sensation. Everyone from Barack Obama to MC Hammer is Twittering, sending out messages of 140 characters or fewer to friends and followers.

The site has made history as a forum for protesters in Iran and is increasingly attracting the interest of big business. Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others have all reportedly been on the phone to Twitter’s founders hoping to buy the business. Now they have a price.

On Friday, Twitter confirmed it had received “significant” financing from firms including T Rowe Price, Insight Venture Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, Spark Capital and Benchmark Capital. The investment is believed to be about $100m. It follows previous investments totalling about $50m and leaves Twitter with a nominal $1 billion value — not bad for a firm that has yet to make a penny and has shown little appetite to do so.

At $1 billion, Twitter is worth as much as General Motors before it went bust, or twice the value of Domino’s Pizza — a company with 10,500 employees and actual sales of $1.4 billion last year.

For some analysts, the idea of a $1 billion company with no revenues is spookily familiar. Jeffrey Lindsay, analyst at Sanford C Bernstein in New York, said the fuss was “a throwback to the 1990s fantasy era of internet start-ups”. He said the investment represented smart money waiting for dumb money to come in and bail it out.

For others, though, Twitter is something far more exciting. The valuation is not out of line with its peers. Facebook, the online social-networking service that claims 300m active users, announced in May it had received another $100m investment from Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies, valuing it at $6.5 billion. Twitter attracts 54m visitors a month, said comScore, the web tracking firm.

For their fans, Twitter and Facebook are redefining the way people communicate. Charlene Li, founder of Altimeter, a tech consultancy, said it was important to focus not just on the technology Twitter had developed but its relationship with the customer.

Li noted that people all around the world are now addicted to sharing their thoughts on Twitter, even their negative thoughts about Twitter itself — that’s a relationship that could be worth a billion, she said. “It took Google four years to make any money,” said Li. “Look at it now.”

Beyond a brief statement, Twitter’s founders have yet to talk about the investment, but their ambitions are nothing if not grand. The firm’s aim is to reach a billion users and become “the pulse of the planet”, according to internal documents published on the blog TechCrunch earlier this year. Another $100m might get them closer to that goal. How much is the planet’s pulse worth?

TWITTER’s offices are everything you would expect from a dotcom start-up. A cavernous warehouse space in a still industrial stretch of San Francisco, the reception has the inevitable bike rack and a trestle table stacked with the tech world’s two main food groups — cereal and fizzy drinks. A huge flatscreen TV, plus video games, dominates one end of the room, and wacky sculpture in the form of two lime green plastic deer are parked in the corner.

Most dotcom companies never get beyond this stage. Nobody makes any money, the space proves too expensive, the company folds. Someone gets to keep the deer, the TV goes on eBay. Twitter has the opposite problem — its offices were too small almost as soon as it moved in and it has been searching for new digs.

Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, started out with the simple idea of developing something that would let him know what his friends were doing.

It wasn’t a new idea — status updates were already part of instant messaging services like Yahoo’s. Anyone used to texting was used to keeping messages short. Perhaps because of its familiarity, Twitter took off at a sensational pace.

Last year, Twitter usage grew 422%. In February this year, it hit the frankly ridiculous growth rate of 1,382%, according to Nielsen Online. There is some suggestion that growth has peaked recently, but no matter which way you cut it, Twitter is huge.

However, all this buzz will be of little use if Twitter never makes a cent. The bet its new investors are making is that Twitter can turn all this chatter into a must-have marketing tool and an invaluable source of intelligence for businesses, while engaging potential consumers in a way that seems to have become increasingly tricky for traditional media.

Set against that potential is the risk that Twitter is just another fad. Not a new Google, but a new Second Life, whose 3D virtual empire rose and fell on a similar wave of buzz-fuelled hype a short cab ride from Twitter’s offices.

“If you think about what is there in terms of technology, it’s not much,” said Li. “In and of themselves each little Tweet doesn’t mean a lot.” But in aggregate, Twitter allows people — and, importantly, companies — to create and follow a dialogue in an entirely new way.

“It’s very quick, very easy, you opt in, I’m not bothering anybody with e-mails or text messages, you choose when you do it. That could be very, very valuable — especially when it comes to brands who want to develop a deeper relationship with customers.”

FOR many people, advertising has increasingly come to be seen as an irritating interruption. Consumers, once a captive audience, now fast-forward ads on their digital TVs, complain about pop-ups on the internet and treat e-mails from firms they are otherwise happy to do business with as spam.

“On Twitter you choose to hear from me and more importantly interact with me in a two-way dialogue,” said Li.

Companies, including Starbucks, already use Twitter to pump out their latest offers to those customers who sign up. Much of the mainstream media is using it to promote their content, offering links to articles in newspapers, magazines or promoting films and TV shows.

“Twitter is a great platform to push out those messages. I don’t mind Starbucks making announcements on my Twitter page but I don’t want them in my inbox,” said Li.

Twitter’s service has been the cause of much complaint. A graphic called the “fail whale” appears when the site crashes, which it often has during global news events such as the death of Michael Jackson.

Analysts expect that some of Twitter’s new cash will be used to harpoon the whale but the rest will go to Twitter’s all-important next phase. Last year, Twitter bought internet search firm Surmize, to build up its own real-time search engine. More add-on purchases are likely from marketing services and advertising software to photo sharing software and desktop applications.

The cash-rich company needs to build a more solid service as it moves toward a sale — which the founders have so far fought against — or float. Critics such as Lindsay compares the situation with YouTube, bought for $1.65 billion in 2006 and a money loser ever since, or Skype, the online telecoms firm bought by eBay for $2.6 billion in 2005. The auction giant struggled to find any use for Skype and is now being sued by its founders as it tries to spin off the business at a loss.

It’s still too early to say who is right. The Tweet looks set to stay even if Twitter fails — just as Second Life’s woes do not mean we will never have a 3D internet. Facebook, which is still growing fast, may well become the new Twitter. Or some other start-up may steal Twitter’s place as the hottest new internet firm. Alternatively, Google, Microsoft or some other group will make Twitter an offer it can’t refuse. One thing seems certain: whatever happens, Twitter’s users will have some very strong opinions about it.

Success in 140 characters

TWITTER is a free online service that enables its users to send and read messages known as Tweets. Each Tweet can be no more than 140 characters long.

Twitter attracts about 54m visitors a month. In February, Nielsen, the media consultancy, ranked it the fastest-growing of its “member communities” category, with a monthly growth of 1,382%.

The microblogging and networking site was dreamed up in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, 32, a computer programmer from St Louis, Missouri. Evan Williams, a former Google employee credited with inventing the term “blogger”, was an early investor and now runs the company with Biz Stone, a long-time colleague, and Dorsey. There are about 70 staff at the headquarters in San Francisco.

Barack Obama, Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears and Stephen Fry are among the high-profile followers of Twitter.

Pear Analytics, the data researcher, surveyed 2,000 Tweets and described the top topics as: news, spam, self-promotion, pointless babble and conversational.

Perhaps not surprisingly, critics have condemned the site for its triviality. However, during the Iranian election Twitter became a sounding board for angry voters. It was also credited with helping to save lives during the recent Californian bushfires by spreading information about the path of the flames.

The average Twitter user is 31, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Just 11% are aged 12 to 17, according to comScore, a research company.

Neilsen says Twitter has a user retention rate of 40%. Many followers drop the service after a month or so.

The privately held company received a new round of investment last week, believed to be $100m (£62.4m), valuing it at $1 billion.

Hitwise, an online research firm, believes Twitter’s growth may have hit a wall early this year. The site is often accessed via third-party applications, making it difficult to track.

3 Important Factors to Make Big Money Online

For some people trying to make money online can be hard and somewhat intimidating. The thing to remember is there are three main factors that are required to make big money online.

No matter what anyone tries to tell you if these three factors are not used in your business then you will never find success. What are these 3 factors?

1. Build a relationship with your customers - Too many people that have a business online think they don't have to be involved with their customers. To a point that is true but it is still important for you to build a business relationship with them.

This will help increase your customer loyalty and bring more money into your business. When your customers do not trust you they will very quickly move on to someone that they do trust.

This means a loss of customers and money for your business. This problem can be done away with by taking the necessary time to do relationship building with every customer.

2. Build a solid foundation for your business - For anyone to set up a solid foundation market research will help in a big way. Don't just start a business and assume it will succeed or last because it won't.

A solid foundation is vital to anyone making money from home. Find out what people want and then give it to them. The more foundation there is the more successful the business will be.

3. Build a list - This is something that is stated all the time online because it is one of the most important factors for business. A list of subscribers that you can contact on a regular basis is your most valuable tool.

You will be earning the respect and trust of your subscribers when you provide reliable and good products or information. These two things are vital for making money online.

Don't just assume that once they are on your list you do not have to do anything else. The truth is that it is important to keep in contact with them and give them what they want. This is the only way to keep them on your list.

These are the three most crucial factors needed for anybody to make big money online. Others have tried without these three things and have failed. Don't make the same mistake they did.

Want the secret to making more money than you ever thought possible?

Want the secret to making more money than you ever thought possible? . . . Put proven Donald Trump secrets to work for you . . . -- Trump University online advertisement

Tyrone Bryant, a 64-year-old D.C. real estate agent and retired Library of Congress police officer, is searching for new strategies while he negotiates with banks to lower his mortgage payments on two homes he is having trouble renting out.

Susan Laraby of Alexandria needs some extra cash because both of her jobs -- interpreter in the federal courts and real estate agent -- are drying up.

Drawn by the imprimatur of Donald Trump -- he of 40 Wall Street in Manhattan, the Miss USA pageant and NBC's "The Apprentice" -- about 500 Washingtonians this week attended one of 15 free sessions at hotels across the Washington area, in search of a playbook for capitalizing on a depressed real estate market. Lured by newspaper and online ads, some came out of personal need to escape financial gloom, others out of pure capitalist curiosity.

They worried hardly at all about whether it is still possible to get rich virtually overnight. If Americans are feeling chastened by the near-collapse of the financial system, there was little sign of that inside the Holiday Inn in Ballston, where a placard in the lobby read "Trump, Think BIG."

As the lunch crowd took their seats, the O'Jays' classic "For the Love of Money" boomed from speakers. Then the Trump University instructor, Stephen Goff, power-suited up, bellowed his introduction: "All right, you guys ready to be the next Trump real estate millionaire? Yes or No!?"

The class looked a little drowsy. "Oh, that was weak," he said. "Let's try that again . . . let's blow the roof off this building . . . You guys are the best in the world. So, you guys ready to be the next Trump real estate millionaire, YES OR NO?!"

"YES!" everyone yelled.

Goff laid out what would be taught: How to buy and sell "potentially millions of dollars worth of property" using no (or very little) personal money or credit. How to buy without a down payment or a bank loan. And then, tantalizingly, Goff said, how to "make money on properties you don't even own."

By the end of this year, about 100,000 people are expected to have attended Trump's free courses across the country, according to Michael Sexton, Trump University's president.

Alan Miranda, 40, of Alexandria, an independent distributor of stem cell enhancement pills, came because he said his parents in Florida spent too much on a second home and could use some advice. Adil Bagirov, 31, an energy consultant who grew up in the former Soviet Union, showed up because he wants to add to his wealth and feed the capitalist dreams he cultivated as a child frustrated with a communist government

"Find it, flip it, forget about it," Goff told his audience. "You don't have to own real estate; you just have to control it."

Online crude trading offers great opportunities

Mr. Fetuga Kabir Adeolu, Chief Executive Officer, FKA Media Concept, has said that online crude oil trading is a veritable opportunity for Nigerians to earn foreign exchange on regular basis even in face of the global financial melt down. According to him “despite the impact of the global financial crises on our economy, which has grossly affected the capital market and other investment options, Nigerians must not lose hope as they can now tap into huge opportunities that exist in online crude oil trading”.

Adeolu, who has achieved remarkable success in the business explained his foray into it. “Some years back, in my search on how to earn legitimate income on the internet, I discovered that online crude oil trading is a good investment option that can earn Nigerians steady legitimate foreign exchange on daily basis. In the business, one does not need to possess crude oil or have physical accesses to it, rather all that a potential trader need to possess a sound skill in online crude oil trading. With that a trader can successfully participate in international crude oil trade.”

The forex and crude oil trade expert disclosed that he now conducts special trainings in Nigeria and elsewhere, adding that he won an award in Cyprus as a result of his exploits.

Adeolu stated that online crude oil trading involved the buying and selling of crude oil in the international market, through the internet. His words: “ Online crude oil trading is the buying and selling of crude oil in the international market, using the opportunities offered by the internet. As a seasoned online forex trader, with fast knowledge about the business, the trading principle of online crude oil was similar to that of forex. The only difference is that crude oil involves trading on commodities, while forex involves trading on foreign exchange, such as dollars, pounds sterling, euros and other global currencies “. He maintained that a skilled online crude oil trader can easily make good forex on daily basis by participating on international crude oil market.

“ You can make good legitimate money in this market by buying and selling of crude oil in the international market. And since Nigeria is one of the largest producers of oil in the
world, Nigerians can explore this yet untapped opportunity of earning steady legitimate money ”, he stressed.

The crude oil trading expert regretted that the growing rate of hardship in the country has turned a lot of youths and many graduates into beggers and career job-seekers, without any hope securing employments. He therefore enjoined them to be self reliant by embracing online crude oil trading.

He said: “ All I’m saying is that there is opportunity for the youths, unemployed graduates, under-employed persons, and those without jobs, to participate in the business. Yes, there is an opportunity for all Nigerians to take part in the global crude oil trading as they can make enough money to cater for themselves. It does not require actual possession of oil, all you need to do is have a broker that will serve as intermediary between you and the market. What I am saying is that you don’t need to take part in the production of oil before you can make money from it. You can make money from market fluctuation by speculating about market prices ”.

Explaining the intricacies of the business, Adeolu said: “When the price is falling you will make money. Also, when the price is rising you will make money. The method of this trading is very, very simple. All you need to do is to get a very good trainer to train you on how to trade the commodity. I am calling on the state governments to empower the youths by getting them trained in this trade. It will also serve as an eye opener for the youths to know what is going on in the international market.

“Given the rising unemployment rate in the country, which has led to growth in various crimes, especially cyber crimes, our organization has mandated itself to training many Nigerians on professional online crude oil trading. These trainings which will take place at different parts of the country is aimed at impacting on participants, with the required skills that will enable them to participate on international crude oil market. This I believe will surely generate jobs for the trained participants, as they will become self-reliant, and also earn legitimate foreign exchange from their newly acquired skills.Imagine someone making $200 per day, will that person look for job again. I think the answer is no, and they can make more than that depending on the amount of money they are using to trade.

A client from Warri who attended our program in Lagos and started trading with $10,000 now has over $60,000 in his account. There are other people like that who are earning higher income. And the fact that the business is legitimate, even makes it a better business choice to explore ”.
Speaking further on the opportunities existing on crude oil trading, Adeolu said: “ The trade is ideal for almost everyone who is interested in making money. Those who are unemployed can trade this to make enough money to take care of themselves. This is the case in the developed countries where many people are not seeking for paid employments, rather with little money they can trade on the international exchange, especially commodity trading. For those who are employed, who want to make additional money, this is their best opportunity to make more money. If you are working under a company and earn a salary, there is a limit at which your wealth will be. That is why there is a need for you to source for additional benefits. The fund managers are the ones that need this trade mostly. Now the stock market is terribly down, this is what their counterpart in US, Great Britain are doing to meet up with their clients, as this is not a one way market, since you can make money from both rising and falling of crude oil prices.”

“ My advice to government is that they should collaborate with our organization,to enable many Nigerians, especially youths and unemployed persons, to access our training programs on crude oil trading. This will make them self employed and useful to the society, and these will discourage them from going into criminal activities. Remember, idle minds are said to be devil’s workshop. Most importantly, the government can collaborate with our organization to offer trainings to most of the youths who are involve in cyber crime. Given the support of the government, we can get this trained on how to make legitimate money from the internet, trading on crude oil.

I strongly believe that if these youths are vast on the internet are offered better ways of earning a decent living on the internet, surely they will embrace it. Therefore, the government and security agencies are welcomed to use our training programs as part of measures to teach our youths better ways of making legitimate income and discourage them from internet scams ”,he added.

Ten Ways to Make Money Doing Genealogy

Ten Ways to Make Money Doing Genealogy

Ever considered turning genealogy into a lucrative profession? Through interviews with prominent and successful family historians, author Loretto Szucs illustrates ten ways a hobbiest could turn professional.

Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow. That book caught my eye a few years ago and it’s still on the list of books I want to read. The problem is I’m too busy doing the work I love to have time to read a book about it! For more than twenty years, I’ve been heavily involved in teaching genealogy, conducting workshops, lecturing, working as an archives specialist, writing and editing on subjects pertaining to genealogy, and most recently working in various management capacities for a major genealogical publishing company.

Probably all of us who are involved in professional genealogy are asked at some point: "You mean you’ve actually made a career out of genealogy? How?" Every professional I interviewed for this article says they have been drawn to the career because they love the work–and because there is a high demand.

With the surging worldwide interest in family history, opportunities abound for anyone wishing to make money in the genealogical field. In a recent USA Today survey, 79.4% of respondents indicated they are extremely interested in learning more about their family tree–and someone has to show them how.

Following are ten ways in which well-known professionals are earning a living doing what they love. If you have the right skills or are interested in obtaining them, it is likely you can make money in the family history marketplace as well.

1. Conduct Genealogical Research for Others
Since good family history research is based on original records, and it is often cost-prohibitive to travel to each location where records were created, there will always be a market for researchers who have a solid knowledge of local sources. Maybe you have already hired someone to do this sort of work, but what’s stopping you from becoming a professional researcher yourself?

Roger Joslyn, CG, FUGA, FASG, has worked full-time as a genealogist since 1978. He began by establishing a research service with a few colleagues, but now he runs his own business working out of a home office.

"You can make a living at this," he says, "but you must be a very keen business person." Joslyn can command a higher fee because of his experience and because he is a Certified Genealogist (CG), a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (FUGA), and a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists (FASG). Like most professional genealogists, clients find Joslyn listed on the Board for Certification (BCG) roster, and in the 1990-2000 Directory of Professional Genealogists (APG, 1999). Although he is on several other lists and rosters, Roger attributes a significant number of his clients to word-of-mouth references.

Kory Meyerink, MLS, is an Accredited Genealogist (AG) with twenty years of full-time experience in the field of family history. When he decided to make it a career, the Salt Lake City resident decided to become accredited first. He feels strongly that professional genealogists should judge themselves against the standards set by the accrediting and certifying institutions.

And, of course, there are different types of researchers. "If you specialize in a locality, no matter what your credentials are, you’re always going to be a record searcher," says Patricia Law Hatcher, CG, a Texas-based researcher, writer, instructor, and professional genealogist.

Hatcher suggests there are two kinds of professional genealogists–record searchers or problem solvers. She says a problem solver "focuses on the how instead of the where. But whether you are a record searcher or a problem solver, organizational skills are essential, and a client’s work should be organized electronically with the aid of computer software so that every detail can be entered and presented in a report."

2. Research for Asset Recovery Firms and Heir Tracers
For various reasons, some individuals lose touch with family members before their deaths, and their estates go unclaimed. Asset recovery firms try to find inheritors of these unclaimed funds. These firms regularly subcontract with family history researchers to help them find living individuals all over the world. In fact, asset recovery firms tend to do a tremendous amount of subcontracting since there is a limit to the research you can do from one city.

"We prove not only that the nearest relative or relatives have been found, but that they are the only surviving relatives,"says Suzanne McVetty, CG, an asset recovery tracer working in New York City. She works primarily with twentieth century records to find individuals who are usually unaware they have inherited unclaimed funds, stocks, bonds, or real estate. Using death certificates, more recent census schedules, city directories, phone books, probates, obituaries, land records, cemetery files and any other record that may divulge biographical information and prove relationships, she locates a decedent’s nearest living relative.

McVetty uses the APG Directory to locate genealogical researchers outside the city. Ancestry Family Historian’s Address Book can also be used to locate a researcher through a genealogical or historical society if the APG Directory does not have a listing for a particular area.

3.Conduct Biographical and Historical Research
Genealogists are often called on to conduct biographical and historical research. Communities, organizations, social historians, scientific agencies, geneticists, authors, and others are often in need of researchers for major and minor projects.

As an independent researcher, I worked on a variety of projects ranging anywhere from researching for the Mayo Clinic the family of a woman who was diagnosed with a rare hereditary disease to assisting a television scriptwriter document events in the life of a celebrity. I also located Native American ancestral records so an individual could qualify for minority status, and helped a landowner solve an ancient property ownership mystery. Volunteering at the National Archives in Chicago was a great opportunity to come in contact with individuals who needed any kind of research.

Brian Andersson, president of Ellis Island & Castle Garden Research, Inc. specializes in locating immigration documents. He has conducted family history research on literally hundreds of well-known personalities including Irving Berlin, Andrew Carnegie, Charlie Chaplin, Claudette Colbert, Walt Disney, Samuel Ellis (eighteenth century owner of Ellis Island), and Bela Lugosi.

4. Write Family History Articles and Books
With nearly thirty book publishing companies and four magazine publishers in the field, your chances of becoming a published writer are significant. Additionally, some general interest publishers will pay for a well-written guide or a feature article on genealogy. Vanity presses and self-publishing are other options that have worked for some genealogical writers. Writer’s Market: 4,200 Places to Sell What You Write is a good reference to use to get your work published.

"There are some tremendous new writing opportunities in writing for online publications," suggests Ancestry Daily News editor Juliana Smith. "With the explosion of data on the Internet, there is the accompanying need for articles on how to use genealogical information on the Web effectively."

The exposure authors get, particularly in magazine articles, can lead to bigger and better careers. Such was the case with former Ancestry Magazine columnist, Linda Swisher, whose work at Ancestry was the springboard for a full-time job as a newspaper journalist.

5. Enter the Publishing World
Being involved in Ancestry’s publishing department for several years has given me an interesting vantage point from which to observe the dramatic growth of interest in genealogy. I have seen the established genealogical book and magazine publishers maintain a healthy business, and I have watched new ones enter the scene. At least one new genealogy book published last year sold more than 200,000 copies in its first four months. There is no question, the demand is there.

With the expansion of genealogy in print, there will be an attendant demand for editors, copy editors, designers, marketers, and more who are necessary to publishing projects. While specific genealogical training is not required, it can be helpful in getting the job.

6. Lecture on Genealogical Topics
There are an estimated 2,000 genealogical societies in the United States, and all of them are looking for new faces with new topics to share with their membership. You can share your genealogical expertise by lecturing to these various groups.

Sandra Hargreaves Luebking, FUGA, who has been involved in family history in one way or another for the past twenty-four years, explains that her training as a presenter at Illinois Bell gave her an advantage when she began lecturing on genealogical topics. She is convinced that anyone who intends to take up genealogical lecturing ought to be sure they have taken a class in public speaking. She also recommends that you start with the "chicken dinner circuit"–various clubs such as the Lions and Rotarians, church groups, etc. "Once you have some experience in those areas," she says, "move on to speaking at local and state genealogical societies. Only after that should one submit papers for presentations at national conferences." Luebking averages seventy lectures a year, and has presented at almost every national conference.

"Good lecturing is based on thorough and well-documented research," says Elizabeth Shown Mills, CG, CGL, FASG, FNGS. Mills did not become involved in genealogical lecturing by design, but rather evolved into it from tracing her husband’s Louisiana French and Spanish ancestry. In doing so she became proficient in that area which led to volunteer research opportunities. Eventually she became one of the most respected lecturers in the field.

7. Teach Genealogy Classes
There are growing numbers of people who are eager to begin their family history research but don’t know where to begin, and there are many professional researchers who are looking to sharpen their skills. Decide what topics you feel comfortable teaching and what type of audience would learn from what you have to offer, and develop your lesson plan from there.

"There is a big difference in lecturing and teaching. In lecturing, you can talk in generalities, but you have to provide details in teaching. Lesson design must be production oriented, and students must be able to do something when they leave. When the course is over, you must leave them with a skill, not just information. It is up to the instructor to enable students to perform. I really love teaching more than lecturing, but it’s a lot harder," says Sandra Luebking. She currently teaches at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, Samford University and is the intermediate course coordinator for the MidAmerica Genealogical Institute.

8. Become a Genealogy Supplies Vendor
Beyond the big-name producers and distributors of genealogical software and books, there is a number of small "mom and pop" genealogical vending companies, as well as individuals who work on a sales commission basis. By the looks of it, genealogical vendors are doing a brisk business. My mailbox is always filled with genealogical catalogs and new book announcements–many of which come from relatively small companies. While a few genealogical vendors, such as Ancestry.com, have online stores where a full-range of genealogical products are offered, many continue in the traditional manner of selling books at conferences and through mail order catalogs.

Karen Green, who started Frontier Press when she wrote her first book in 1982, attributes most of her success to the fact that, while carrying many genealogical guidebooks, she also carries a large number of social histories. Green recognizes the need to carry information that detail both family history research and an ancestor’s environment.

The Family History Discovery Shoppe, located in downtown Salt Lake City, is a newcomer in this field. In addition to selling a traditional line of genealogy books and supplies, the owners have added appeal by providing a lounge area–much like other bookstores are doing these days–as well as meeting rooms and genealogy classes.

The multicultural appeal of genealogy and family history is most apparent, however, at national genealogical conferences where it isn’t uncommon to have two hundred vendors selling remarkably diverse materials that family historians need to conduct research efficiently.

9. Work as an Archivist, Librarian, or Society Administrator
Most archivists, librarians, and society administrators did not enter their chosen career tracks with the intention of serving genealogists. There are, however, unique opportunities in these areas for those with genealogical skills.

Constance Potter, whose official title at the National Archives and Records Administration is "Genealogy Expert," worked for several years out of the National Archives in Washington as freelance researcher and writer. She specialized in military searches, and placed an ad in the Genealogical Helper to generate business. Later she took a part time job with the National Archives, writing and editing catalogs. Those experiences prepared her for her full-time job that came when she "was in the right place, at the right time, with the right credentials."

"The best archivists and genealogical reference librarians are those who are interested in research, in history, in solving problems, and who work well with people," says John Scroggins, who recently retired from thirty-five years of management at the National Archives.

He adds, "While most archivists, whether at NARA or at the state or local level, would not admit to it, many depend on the genealogy traffic to justify their existence." Because ninety percent of those who use the Archives are family historians, the National Archives has enjoyed a great deal of publicity with the recent media focus on genealogy.

Scroggins also notes that many of the volunteers in archives are professional genealogists. Some do research for others as an outgrowth of their volunteer work, while others begin to volunteer both as a way of learning more about the resources available and as a way of becoming better known.

Rhonda Frevert, recently named Curator of Local and Family History at the Newberry Library in Chicago, says it was her volunteer work with genealogists in historical societies that led her to pursue a career in librarianship.

A number of state, local, and even specialized genealogical societies have paid management positions. For example, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania is currently seeking "a self-motivated individual of vision to lead the Society as executive director."

10. Contribute to Database Compilation Projects
"Anyone who wishes to be successful in the genealogical business arena should immerse themselves in as many aspects of the field as possible," says Jake Gehring, a professional genealogist, lecturer, and writer. Computers and the Internet continue to expand the opportunities for family historians. Gehring says the greatest need genealogists have is access to databases–and there is money to be earned in compiling them. He suggests Ancestry.com’s Partner program as a viable means to accomplish that.

Dick Eastman, whose Online Genealogy Newsletter goes out weekly to thousands of readers, is perhaps one of the best-known computer genealogists. He agrees that the real growth will be in developing mega-databases.

"Of course it will be tough for anyone to go up against the already-established sites," Eastman warns, "but a company that can partner with archives, and libraries, and organizations will probably do pretty well. Also, there is need for biographical databases online, where individuals could add on. The ability to collectively build biographies online would be great."

Matthew Helm, co-author of Genealogy Online for Dummies, and co-editor of Genealogical Computing agrees. He says, "The greatest area of growth will be in digitization of sources. Databases are great, but there’s nothing like getting to see the actual document. People want to be able to see a real census page, a passenger list, military record, old newspaper, and parish register. Just think of what’s in the U.S. National Archives alone, then think beyond that to records around the globe that could be digitized. That’s where the real growth is going to be."

"There’s always a new technology around the corner," concludes Matthew Helm, "and that means someone is going to make some money on it."

With some creative thinking, you might discover the next big revolution for family historians. Ultimately, how much money can be made seems to depend on where you live, what kind of skills you have, and how you market those skills. But the money is out there, if you want to go for it.

Twitter About to Get Mo’ Money

Twitter, the messaging web site that has become an Internet sensation, is nearing a deal to close as much as $100 million of new funding from as many as seven investors, according to people familiar with the deal.

The investor group includes mutual fund giant T. Rowe Price and private-equity firm Insight Venture Partners, which are new investors to Twitter. The $100 million investment is about twice as much as Twitter was reportedly expected to haul in this latest round of fund-raising.

Other investors in this round include venture-capital firms Spark Capital and Institutional Venture Partners, which have previously invested in Twitter.

Of course, the valuation is what everyone is interested in and it looks like the $1 billion mark is the one that has stuck for now. All of this activity once again will stir the “How will Twitter make money?” pot but that probably needs to be answered sooner than later, don’t ya think?

They must have something planned because one would hope that the days of investing in a great idea without any real revenue potential are long gone. I guess stranger things have happened but there must be something that is compelling enough to generate that kind of investment.

So go ahead, Pilgrims, give us your Twitter will or will not make money scenarios. What can they do to merit the $1 b valuation? In five years will Twitter be a rockstar or a footnote in the evolving Internet industry?

Beware of Faux Google Make-Money Scheme

FOUNTAIN HILLS - As the unemployment rate nears 10 percent, more and more Americans are getting desperate to find work. That's why more people are tempted by too-good-to-be-true offers -- that tend to turn out to be fake.

In the recession, many people are trying to make extra money by working from home through the internet.

Kim Eoff lives in Fountain Hills, and she fell for a new money-making scheme going around that seemed to be fronted by a reliable name.

Eoff was browsing the internet when she came across an article in the "Arizona Times Online.'"

"I've lived here 15 years and I know there's no Arizona Times, but we have a Fountain Hills Times and we have Arizona, so in my mind, I thought that was an online newspaper I don't know about," she says. The article focused on Mary, a Fountain Hills woman who made about $5,500 a month posting links.

The story goes on about a system called "Google Millionaire" and a link sends readers to a page called "Google Fortune."

"My husband is like check it out. Let's look at it and see. It might be worth something and she's right here in Fountain Hills, this woman. We'll like OK. Small world. Let's do it," says Eoff.

But the real Google says they're not affiliated with this -- and the newspaper doesn't actually exist. You'll also find the same article in the Texas Times, and in it's story, Mary instead lives in San Jose or Houston.

To join, Eoff had to give them her credit card information. That's when she says, things got a little fishy.

"When you see Google and their logo, you instantly think, OK, who wouldn't want to work for Google and make a few extra bucks? It's such a large company," says Eoff. "Bells started ringing and I'm usually a very, very skeptical person. I don't ever do this. I Snope everything. What is this? What is that? But this one I fell for."

Eoff called her bank and canceled her credit card, losing only $2 for the trial period. But if she hadn't canceled within a week, the company would've charged her $69 a month.

A Google spokesperson says Google is not affiliated with these sites and cannot comment on their claims.

How to Profit Off Your Online Friends

At Monday’s session of the TechCrunch 50 start-up conference, one idea particularly caught our eye: Companies that help you make money from your social-networking connections.

Josh Lowensohn/Flickr
At the TechCrunch 50 conference in San Francisco

TechCrunch 50 participants present their ideas to a panel of experts. One of the most popular presentations at Monday afternoon’s panel came from Udorse, a New York start-up backed by Founders Fund, which allows you to turn the photos that you upload to Facebook and elsewhere into “endorsements” for the products, places and things shown in them.

Think of Udorse as affiliate marketing for the common man. You sign up for the service and start tagging photos in Facebook with endorsements. If you endorse a product from a brand that works with Udorse, it will share a percentage of the revenue from the clicks made by your friends. The company launched on Monday with partner agreements from Armani Exchange and American Apparel.

(Google has invested in a company called Piaxazza that offers a similar picture-tagging technology, though it is more for publishers than for social-network users.)

Another start-up, called RefMob, offers a slightly different take on making endorsements to your friends. RefMob focuses on helping you broadcast — again, via Facebook — referral programs to your friends. These referral programs are the kinds of bonuses you often get via junk mail and email from banks, Netflix and other companies if you convince a friend to sign up. If you share a referral deal with your friends through RefMob, and one of your friends buys in, RefMob automatically shares the bonus with both of you. The company launched on Monday and hasn’t yet announced what companies it has on board, but it says it’s getting as much interest from local businesses like dentists as from big brands.

In marketing, creating word-of-mouth endorsements from trusted friends is considered the holy grail. But can online friendships and commerce mix? Google VP Marissa Mayer said she “really loved” the idea behind Udorse, and that she figured this would be a way for social networks to make money.

But at least one of the experts on the panel raised concerns with the idea. Tony Hsieh, CEO of online retailer Zappos, said the idea behind Udorse was “a little weird” — especially for one person to get paid for his friends to dress like him. As for RefMob, he said it seems like an “unnatural friend behavior” to formalize these sorts of referral programs.

In chats with this blog on the conference “demo pit” floor, both companies said that they’re not just about making money from your friends. Rather, they’re providing people ways to monetize information about their lifestyles that they’re already sharing online. RefMob said you’re not necessarily endorsing a product by passing along a discount to your friends — you’re just letting your friends know about a good deal that’s out there. And Udorse emphasized that people won’t just use the software to flack products from the company’s partner brands —
they’ll also use it promote a friend’s new fashion line or gallery exhibit.

"Don't Get Scammed Again...

From the Desk of Mark Hodges, Publisher and Senior Reviewer:

Visit Now: http://www.dont-get-scammed-again.com/

...Wouldn't it be nice to make a ton of money with minimal effort from home in your underwear? I know that I'd love to have more time with my family and have tens of thousands of dollars flowing into my bank account each month working only a few hours a week from the comfort of my own home, no boss looking over my shoulder.

Is this really possible? Is there a way to make a ton of money on the internet with little work and a low investment? Or even a high investment if the return is high enough to rationalize it? We certainly have been told that there are by the hundreds of so-called marketing "gurus" on the internet.

It doesn't matter if it is real estate investing, selling by classified ads, stock marketing investing, buying a book/course on how to build your own internet business, internet affiliate marketing, or High Yield Investment Programs (HYIP's). We have all been told the same fantastic claims of how these individuals make a ton of money and how they can show you ways to duplicate their success.

I have learned over the last 5 years that 99% of these people and systems are total frauds. They are mere schemes that prey on the hopes and dreams of people that want to make a better life for themselves. You may have fallen prey to some of these scam artists, convincing you to buy their latest "get rich quick" scam. Me too. I can't recall how many of these programs that I have bought over the years, I have dozens of e-Books collecting dust on my hard drive. I always think that this one is different and this is what I need to "make it".

I don't know why, but I guess I see the "good" in people and was "sold" time and time again after being duped by their marketing scheme. That is until I got FED UP!

Finally, I decided to do something about it. I decided to get to the bottom of this fascination we all have with get rich quick schemes and home based businesses and find out if there are any LEGITIMATE programs out there for making money.

I literally contacted the administrator or owner of every "get rich quick" or home based business website I could find. Posing as an investor I convinced them that I was seriously interested in buying their entire website and/or business. That way once the dollar signs started flashing in their heads they would give me access to the members area so I could see what I would be "buying." Well, I was absolutely disgusted with 99% of what I found. Many of the owners even boasted about how many people bought their useless products. I repeatedly found:

  • Outdated Information
  • No real support
  • Products. (Many of them didn't even have any real products, they just wanted you to recruit new people into the business)
  • Links that were supposed to give me all kinds of info turned out to be dead and sent me nowhere
  • There weren't any real opportunities to achieve a full-time income right away
  • Zero Customer Service, once you part with your money your left hanging out to dry all by yourself
  • A lack of any detailed information, all generalities, no specifics

I quickly realized that these so-called Get Rich Quick and Home Based Businesses were totally useless. And the owners knew it, yet they were laughing all the way to the bank! Needless to say I didn't respond to any of their offers to buy their businesses or programs.

Surprisingly enough, I did find some programs that are run by real business owners that put real money in your pocket each month. They each have the potential to create a full-time income from home. These programs actually have a huge percentage of their membership actually making money. I realized that I had found a couple of diamonds in the rough.

The owners are real people who are really interested in helping you make money. The websites are packed with information and the products are filled with money making information. I contacted some of the people that used these programs and they were all in fact making money, some of them were making $20,000 and more per month and some were making a few hundred extra dollars each and every month. But, don't take my word for it, go check out the sites. You decide.

--------------------------------------------------

Side Bar -

I don't want you to rush to buy or join these programs. That's right, I said NOT to buy or join these programs now. I want you to wait and make sure that you have wasted your money on all of the other useless, lame programs on the internet before you buy these. Make sure that you have bought all of the other programs that will fail, and you know they will fail, then come back and try these proven winners.

---------------------------------------------------

These programs and courses do charge fees (some minimal and some larger) to get started but that is to be expected with any business. I found that they had a great staff that was willing to help me succeed. I recommend that you join these programs quickly because they are filling up fast. The owners are afraid that they may have to shut off the membership so they can serve everyone in a professional manner. Their staff is already stretched thin!

Well, my search for legitimate opportunities on the web has come to an end. I must say that I am thoroughly disappointed with what's available out there and I would advise you to not take chances on any programs other than the ones listed. If you do, however, I won't say I told you so!

I wish you success in whatever decision you make and I sincerely hope that you find the program that will give you the life you are searching for.

Whatever you do **DO NOT** buy or pay to join any of these programs until you have tried all of the other "Get Rich Quick" programs out there and are unsatisfied with them, as you and I both **KNOW** you will be.
